Mixed Media Art Journal Page using Color Burst

Creative Team member Zoey Emanuela Scrapelli wows us today with the bright and vibrant art journal page using Color Burst.

Zoey says:

Hello everyone, I am so excited to be back on Ken Oliver's blog! Today I want to show you this bright art journal page! I worked on a mixed media paper and I simply added few drops of Color Burst Violet and Color Burst Indigo and spritzed a bit of water -- I let it drip and move all around the page and used a second piece of mixed media paper to "catch" the excess.  I blended in Color Burst Yellow Ochre and Color Burst Lemon Yellow. I simply love the way they all blends creating new shades!

Then I die cut a shape and alphabet from the second piece of paper, added some stitching around and then I assembled everything together!
Isn't that page just a "Burst of Color" ?

I am in love with these powder, every time the results is different!

Over my website you will be able to find a small tutorial on how I made this page!

Stay happy stay creative, till next time!

Mixed Media Techniques for Art Journaling with Julie Nutting Stamps from Prima Marketing Inc.

This summer I've been teaching a mixed media class where we focus on technique...we've misted, sprayed, painted, used stencils, used modeling paste, inks, acrylic paints...we've spattered and splashed and layered...

And until now we've really focused on creating layered backgrounds...This week we're going to incorporate Julie Nutting Cling Stamps from Prima Marketing Inc.

The stamps are great and perfect for mixed media techniques...I've stamped a few images to get started.

On this journal page, I stamped directly on the page and colored over the background...it gives a cool look and you can still somewhat see the background layer through the colored stamp.

For next week's class, we're using quotes that are about self affirmation and joy, after all art should be a joyful activity!

As you can see our background pages all turned out really cool with lots of layers.

I am looking forward to sharing the techniques with our group...and I am happy to see some of the pages coming together so nicely.

We meet once a month, on the second Tuesday, at Mary's Scrapden in Evansville, Indiana...we usually have a full house and have a lot of fun...I always look forward to our Mixed Media for Art Journaling class...it's always awesome!

Mixed Media Techniques for Art Journaling

This year, I'm involved in a really cool mixed media workshop...I'm teaching mixed media techniques for art journaling.  We meet once a month to learn a couple new techniques, to practice those techniques, and to share a little bit about what we've created since we last met.

The premise is simple...let's get together and explore some new techniques using the vast array of products and tools we have at our disposal.  We started with a blank journal...

Then used stencils, spray mists, to add color and pattern to our pages...

I love this class because everyone's journal is a unique piece of personal art.

We've even used vintage Tupperware doilies from the 60's to add some cool pattern...

Tonight we're going to work with some paints and mediums to mask out specific areas of pages we've already worked on....

We're also going to work with acrylic mediums to create interesting backgrounds...in this lesson we'll explore mixing color for energy and visual interest.

And we're going to use modeling paste to create some really cool texture with stencils...it's going to be a fun class.

We're just getting started on our mixed media journey together...so up until now, we've been creating backgrounds and experimenting with color and texture...in a few weeks, we'll start stamping, adding collage pieces and using words as we continue our mixed media journey...

We meet once a month at Mary's Scrapden in Evansville Indiana...the class is basically full at 20 students and we're on a wait list for anyone else who wants to join in...depending upon availability...this is really a cool experience...

Journaling from the Heart with Spellbinders Media Mixage: Textured Metals

Art journaling can take many forms, and lately I've been thinking of ways to tell stories and preserve memories that are unique and utilize materials and techniques that are not commonly used in scrapbooking or card making.  Today I created another heart journal with textured metal.

I started this little exploration last week when I shared a heart journal that has textured metal covers and embossing powders.
Today, I used the same materials,  Spellbinders Media Mixage Hearts Three Blanks, resin paper made from Spellbinders Media Mixage Ephemera Papers One
and Susan Lenart Kazmer ICE Resin but texturized the metal heart blanks with an embossing folder.

The embossing folder added deep texture to the metal blanks.  I treated them with a patina solution, then sanded to emphasize the really cool viney texture.

I added transparent vintage photos: I'd created them earlier by printing photos on transparency film.

The photos I chose today are of my grandparents on their wedding day. This little journal was simple and fast to make, and also preserves a memory in a way that is both meaningful and symbolic. When you create a little journal like this, try to tell the story with simple imagery and few words.  Images or pictographs are the vocabulary of art, we communicate through the images we choose.  The vocabulary here was simple, a heart tangled in vines and photographs of two people whose lives would be entwined for the next fifty or so years.
I love how this little journal looks and feels.  Texturing the metal makes the journal feel like a little antique photo charm and it will make a great little gift or package tie on for someone in my family.

When I started, I just wanted to practice some metal embossing techniques, but ultimately I shared a family memory and preserved it in a tiny heart journal.  I hope you'll be inspired to incorporate textured metals into your vocabulary of work...it's easier than you might think and the "pay off" is big...it looks great.

Thanks for stopping by today...go create something beautiful!

Journaling from the Heart with Spellbinders Media Mixage: Embossing Powders on Metal

Art journaling can take many forms...it doesn't always have to be in a big book with loads of paint and technique.  Today, I created a little metal art journal...you can use this tiny little heart journal to tell your story or share your personal memories.  I think it's really cool.

Spellbinders Media Mixage Blanks Ken Oliver

For the covers of this journal I used Spellbinders Media Mixage Hearts Three Blanks, they can be manipulated with inks and embossing powders. I textured them withSpellbinders Artisan X-plorer and   Spellbinders Media Mixage Texture Plate Crackle.

Then created resin paper with Spellbinders Media Mixage Ephemera Papers One
and Susan Lenart Kazmer ICE Resin, and die cut the paper with Spellbinders Dies that match the metal blanks.

I punched holes in each page of the journal then threaded them together with a piece of antique sari fabric from Nepal.

Mixed Media

You can use each page of the journal to tell part of your story in a way that is artful and inspired.  You'll wear your heart journal or use it as an embellishment for a handmade card, layout, or mixed media project...there are lots of ways to share your story, each inspired and different.
